ON THE LOCAL TAXATION OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN. 313 Appendix N° 26. GRANT of a Ferry to the City of Dublin. CHARLES the Second by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland King, Defender of the faith, & c. To all men to whom these presents shall come, greeting: WHEREAS We have taken into our gracious consideration the letters from our deputy and councell of our said kingdom of Ireland, directed to our right trusty and right entirely beloved cousin and counsellor, James Duke of Ormond, our lieutenant general and general governor of that our kingdom, bearing date the fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred sixty and four, and the humble desire of the mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of our city of Dublin, in our said kingdom of Ireland, which by their petition they presented to our said deputy and councell of that our kingdom, and humbly besought them to recomend unto us, and the answer of our said deputy and councell of our said kingdom of Ireland, to those, their desires, and considering the eminent merits and services of our said city, not only in the time of the reigne of our royal father of ever glorious memory, deceased, but at the time of our happy restoration, and being informed that it is very expedient and necessary, for the common good and safety of our subjects who dwell and reside within and neere unto our said city of Dublin, and the suburbs of the same; and that it will also conduce much to the safety of the public and security of our said city, that the ferry over the river of Annaliffy should be committed to the charge and oversight of the mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of our said city of Dublin, and their successors; Know ye therefore, that We for the considerations aforesaid, and for divers other good causes and considerations us thereunto especially moving, of our special grace, certain knowledge and mere motion, by and with the advice and consent of our right trusty and right well beloved cousin and councellor, Thomas Earl of Ossory, our deputy general of our said kingdom of Ireland, and our privy councell of the same, and according to the tenor and effect of our letters, bearing date at our court at Whitehall, the fourteenth day of March in the seventeenth year of our reign, and now inrolled in the rolls of our high court of Chancery in our said realm of Ireland, have given, granted and con- firmed, and by these presents, for us, our heirs and successors, do give, grant and confirm unto the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of our said city of Dublin, and their successors for ever, the said ferry or passage over the river of Annaliffy, together with free liberty and privilege of transporting, carrying and recarrying all manner of passengers over the said water, and all fees, profits, commodities and advantages, with the fee of a half- penny ( or less, if less hath been accustomed to be taken) of every passenger that shall pass in any of the ferry boates over the said water of Annaliffy, together with free liberty and power to provide and erect one or more ferry- boat or boates, for the carrying and transport- ing of all and all manner of passengers to and from the said city, over the said water, and all things whatsoever necessary belonging thereunto, in as large and ample manner as any other person or persons whatsoever heretofore using the said ferry have had used occupied or enjoyed the same, To have, hold, use, exercise and enjoy the said ferry and ferries, and all fees, profits, commodities and advantages, with the fee of a halfpenny ( or less, if less have been accustomed to be taken) of every passenger that shall pass in the said feny or ferries, and all and singular other the premises unto the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city of Dublin, and their successors for ever, the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city of Dublin, and their successors, yielding and paying therefore unto us, our heirs and successors, at the receipt of our court of Exchequer in our said king- dom of Ireland, the just and full sum of four pounds sterling, current money of England, at the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel and Easter, by even and equal portions : The said ferry or ferries to be exercised by the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city, and their successors, or by their sufficient deputy or deputies, agent or agents, servant or servants ; and our will and pleasure is, and We do by these presents for us, our heirs and successors, straitly charge, command and require that the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens, and their successors, or their sufficient deputy or deputies, agent or agents, servant or servants, or some of them, do from time to time and at all times hereafter, from sun- rising and an hour before, until sun setting and an hour after, give due attendance upon the execution of the said office with sufficient boates, and all other things necessary, and belonging to the said ferry and ferries as becometh: And our further will and pleasure is, and We do by these presents, for us, our heirs and successors, straitly charge and command that no other person or persons do, or shall at any time hereafter exercise, keep or maintain any ferry- boat or boates, or carry over any person or persons whatsoever, for gain or hire, over the said river of Annaliffy, at any place or places between the bridge of Dublin and the Ring's End, other than the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of our said city of Dublin, and their successors, or such person or persons as shall from time to time be lawfully autho- rized under them, upon paine of our high displeasure : And further, of our more abundant grace, certain knowledge and mere motion, by and with the advice and consent aforesaid, and according to the tenor and effect of our said letters, We have given and granted, and by these presents, for us, our heirs and successors, We do give and grant unto the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of our said city of Dublin, and their successors, that these our letters patent, or the inrollment thereof, and every clause, article, matter and thing whatsoever herein contained, shall be in by and through all things firm, good, valid, sufficient and effectual in the law unto the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of 549- 4 K our
