There are also Gardeners employed to cultivate the garden, but they are not employed in any other way, nor are any prisoners employed in the garden. The value of the garden stuffs consumed more than repays their wages ; they have no rations, nor do they lodge in the prison. An Engine- man is likewise employed to attend the apparatus for warming the female pentagons, at 27 5. per week, besides extra wages if employed at unusual hours; he has no lodging provided him, nor rations. There is also one guinea per week paid to a person as Clerk of the Works, similar to what is denominated a labourer in trust in other public buildings, to superintend any repairs that may be necessary, and arrange the tradesmen's bills for such repairs; a portion only of his time is em- ployed for this sum for the benefit of the establishment. A Schoolmaster is in contemplation and rules framed for regulating his duties, but neither the appointment nor salary are yet finally settled. Rob. Auld, Secy. 549-
