a n^ wq ON THE LOCAL TAXATION OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN.. 159 '• 3( 3 Brought forward To Collector for English light Duties: Milford, i d. p' ton - South Stack, frf. p'ton Smalls, 2 d. p' ton - Bardsly, \ d. p' ton Exchange Skerries, 2 d. p' ton British Vessels - To two Tidewaiters, inwards, during discharge of the cargo, 20 days,") at 2/ 8 f. each for board ...... - J To one Tidewaiter, outwards, during the period of loading, 20 days,~ l at 2/ 8 f. / The charge for tidewaiters is unknown in England; it was discontinued in Ireland when fees in the Customs were abolished there, and the tidewaiters received an increased salary as compensa- tion, but subsequently the charge has been revived with impunity. Exclusive of the above direct charges to which vessels are liable in Dublin, there are many im- posts upon ships in particular trades, for instance timber and coals; and exclusive of all these charges the indirect levies are extremely vexatious, witness the annexed copy of an outward entry recently passed, by which it will appear, that although the duty to the Crown, upon this entry amounts to only one shilling and ninepence ; the indirect charges amount to one pound nine shillings and three- pence. When it is recollected that there are numerous shippers, and consequently many of these outward entries per each vessel, and a much greater number of consignees, and consequent inward entries for inward cargoes, it will appear that these charges amount in the aggregate, to a very large sum annually. COPY OF OUTWARD ENTRY. Dublin, 30th January 1823. Outwards.— The " Wilson," Britton, for New York. Jas Jameson & Co. s. d. Can you inform the Committee how much that charge amounts to upon the tonnage, or upon the number of sail ?— It is regulated by the draught of water, so much per foot. # What rate does it amount to, or how much does it produce, as applicable to the coal trade of the city of Dublin ?— By the ballast office accounts it appears that last year, endingthe 5th of January 1823, the pilotage of ships from sea was 3,026/. 2S, 10d. and the pilotage of ships up and down the river was 644 /. 4 s. 3 d.; but of those the ballast office had not kept any separate account how much of that sum was paid by coal ships, and how much by other ships. , Have you been able to make any calculation how much is paid by the coal ships?— In this account which I handed in, I computed it at only 500/. a year ; but this is only a charge made upon ships, without any service whatever being rendered on that account, because the practice lately pursued by a number ot masters of vessels, in consequence of the high price charged for ballast, was to take 549- I i magistrates, Mr. Isaac Stewart.
