DEATH OI MR SHERidAN.— We have the painful task of recording the death of a man, as distinguished for public talents any within our recollection.— On Sunday last, at 12 o'clock at noon died, at his house, in Saviile- row. The Rt Hon R. B Sheridan, in the 65th year of his age. The public qualities of Mr. Sheridan are fresh in the recollection of our readers; with his pri- vate foibles antl his private virtues, we have nothing to do ; but we should not render justice to the character of this eminent man. if we did not shortly pay a hasty tribute to his memory. As an orator, his eloquence was commanding—- his wit of a superior cast, unconta- xniunted by ascerbity. and his argument was conclusive. No one doubted his patriotism— of that he has left a memorial in the history of iris Parliamentary conduct during the proceedings at the Nore. On various occa- sions he stood aloof from his party, when his own judg- ment directed him to serve the public cause. Sure we are, now his failings ( and who is without them) are bu- ried in the grave, his memory, as a public character, will be recollected with gratitude, and his death be sin- cerely lamented For several weeks prior to his death, be lay under arrest, and it was only by the firmness and humanity of the two Physicians who attended him. Dr. Baillie and Dr. Bain, that an obdurate attorney wa prevented from executing a threat to remove him from 5ust ... a death- bed in gaol Will it tie believed, that 4 man who has adorned the age in which lie lived with such varieties of light and splendour, should him- self have been left to feel the pressure of want ? He en- joyed however, to the last moment, the sweetest con solation that t e heart can feel, in the affectionate ten- derness, sympathy, and attention of his amiable wife and son. Mrs. Sheridan. though hesself labouring under severe illness could not be withdrawn from his • couch. She watched over him with the most anxious solicitude through the whole of that protracted suffer- ing which parted them for ever.— London Packet. steam- Parket— The Duke of Wellington sailed from Runcorn at five o'clock on Sunday morning the 30th ult. and arrived at this port at seven. She sailed from hence, with passengers, about eleven, and landed them at Run- corn. She departed from Runcorn for Warrington, whither she arrived at two o'clock. She left it again at half- past two for Runcorn, where she landed her passen- gers. and. having taken in a fresh cargo, sailed for Liver- pool, and arrived litre at half past seven o'clock in the evening. The whole distance which she sailed in the course of the day was upwards of 80 miles; a distance, we imagine, wh it'll no vessel ever performed in the « ame time on this intrica e river. The following prisoners have been committed to our Castle since our last:— John Tomlinson, Thos Hyde and John Haynes, for a burglary in the house of Jno Taylor, at Manchester, and stealing a £ 1 Bank Note, 50s, other silver coin, and 50)- pence in copper.— Wm. Harris, for stealing at Liverpool, four doubloons, six Spanish dollars, and one piece of gold, the property of Israel Hess. Nancy Rowlandson, fur want of sureties to keep the peace, especially towards her husband, Geo. Rowlandson, of Lancaster.— Thomas Wilson, for break- ing open the house of Anthony Pritchard, at Sephton, in the day- time, no person being therein, and stealing di vers articles of wearing apparel. John Bateson, for want of sureties to keep the peace, especially towards John Procter, of Ellel. Thomas Smith, for killing and slaying Alice Chadderton, at Ashton- under- Line. James Wheelan and John Cummins, for the wilful murder of James Beaghan, at Liverpool.— Lancaster Gazette. By the Coroners' Bill, the fees of these useful and important Officers are to be increased as follows; For every inquisition on view of a body noi? £• s. d. dying in prison 3 2 0 0 Ditto, dying in prison, a sum at the pleasure? j Q of the magistrates, not exceeding ^ For every mile a Coroner shall " be compelled? q j g to travel to take any inquisition ^ No Coroner to take any fee or reward, other than a fee of 13s 4d in cases of murder or manslaughter. THURSDAY heNSHAW V. ATKINSON. This was a case which has been already twice before ^ he public, and is attended with the extraordinary cir- cumstances of having been twic » agitated in the Court of Delegates without any decision, in consequence of the Cour". being equally divided in opinion on each oc- casion. It was an allegation originally propounded in the Consistory Court of Chester, and it was attempted to impeach the validity of a will executed by the la'e Sir thomas Henshaw, in which, after making various dispositions 01 a large property, he, by a codicil, be- queathed to a Mr. Atkinson the sum of j? 21,000 Mr. liensiiaw unfortunately afterwards committed suicide. and the coroner's inquest found a verdict of lunacy The suit therefore was brought to desire that an intes- tacy should be decreed, but the Consistory Court had decided in favour of tire will; and, upon a removal of the cause to York, this decision was confirmed. An appeal was then made to the Court of Delegates, com- posed of six commissioners, who dividing equally upon the codicil iu question, without disturbing th, rest of the sentence of the Ecclesiastical Court, a second commis sion, consisting i f eight members, was appointed, whose enquiries were terminated by a similar result. The cause now came 011 to be tried before a Court composed of six of the Judges, and of eight Doctors of Civii Law. Dr. Stoddart was proceeding to open the case on the part of the respondent, when Serjeant Copley, who was retained on the same side, submitted to the Court, that, as one of the Spgeants, he. in point of rank, bad a title to precede a Doctor of Civil Law, and that it was due to those of his own order that this title should be as serted. The Learned Serjeant then handed a written paper containing an extract from some authority on the point. Dr. Stoddart declared he should feel very sincere sa- tisfaction to find that the precedency was due to hi: Learned Friend.^ He could not lay claim to any preat experience with regard to this point; but be had been informed by the Dean of the Arches, that there was a case which might be considered as a precedent favour- able to the right of his profession, and which, therefore, it would not be becoming in him to surrender. The truth appeared to be, that there was a perfect equality of rank betw een the servientvs ad legem and the doctores legum civilium they proceeded in their respective Cour. s vart < he Serjeant taking precedency in foro reghiA and the Doctor in foro civili. To establish this principle,- he begged to read a pretty long extract " from Sir H. Spelman's Glossary. All the ancient writers spoke in the highest terms of the dignity of Doctors of Civil Law, and one author enumerated no Jess than 150 privileges which belonged to thein. Water- bouse and Oughton were the authorities to which he would principally direct the attention of their Lord ships j and if, on consideration of them, they should de- termine for the . ight of his Learned Friend, he should cheerfully submit to their decision. Mr. Serjeant Copley did not think the quotations ad- duced by his Learned Friend proved any priority on either side, and were therefore not at all decisive of the question. Thf Court was then cleared for about half an hour, T? hen U was finally arranged that the point should he reserved— that Dr. Stoddart should open the pleadings, and that Mr. Serjeant Copley should then be heard on the general merits of the case. Mr. Serjeant Copley, and afterwards Dr. Stoddart, then addressed the Court at great length for the respon- dent, contending that the evidence on the* other side was whol^ insufficient to support the plea, that Air. Atkin- fj^ hat! procured the codicil in question to be made by # rercising an under influence1 over the mind of the tesl tutor or the genera! allegation that there was any defi- ciency of testamentary capacity, enher at the time the oiiginal will was executed, or the codicil. At half past three the Court adjourned, in order to allow time to the. tinsel for the respondent to compress the points of tiieir defence into the narrowest compass, as the Court cannot sit latter than Tuesday neat. Solicitors, Warrington BILIOUS DISORDERS! r tHE afflicted with Bilious Complaints. wJU meet A with speedy and effectual relief from that most excellent medicine GALL'S ANTIBILIOUS PILLS. It is a well known fact, that most of the diseases in- cident to rriankind. proceed from, or are connected with, a vitiated state of the Bile; such as indigestion, acid eructations, heartburn, flatulency, costiveness, cholic or griping pains in the bowels, cramps in various parts of the body, jaundice, sick head- ache, lowness of spirits, and a numerous train of nervous disorders A single dose of Gall's Antibilious Pills will, in most cases, effectually relit- Te these distressing com- plaints, and by timely application prevent their return. TO Dr. SMITH — Sir, in the year 1813, I con tracted an inveterate disease. I applied to a Quack in Shrewsbury, who assured me a sound cure, and gave me two boxes of pills; this Quack leaving town, in a short time I found myself going worse, 1 applied to a Mr. ****, Apothecary. Having a trial with him about six months, he assured me I was as sound as any man, and he sent me in his bill, which was two guineas; and I continued a few months, when my disorder broke out worse than ever. I then applied to a Druggist at Mr. * » » * « **' s, of the name of *•***, and he assured me he could cure me in a short time; however, I was un- der his care four months; I then was under the obligation of getting a stick to walk with : so I left him and I applied to another gentleman of the faculty, and he stronglv recommended the Salop Infirmary, but I denied going there, so lie attended me as a private pa- tient about two months, but all in vain and to no pur- pose, for I found my disorder growing worse. I shortly after dropped in company with an old school- fellow, and he recommended your most valuable medicine the Ploughman's Drops, and by taking one small bottle I could go on with my work ; and by continuing to take only four more wy health was perfectly restored, and my ulcers sound and healed, and am now as souud and as well as ever I was in my life, And remain, dear sir, Your most humble servant, Shrewsbury, July \ 5th, 18i5. SIR,— A son of ours, 1.3 years of age, about 24 months ago, whilst in the employ of Mr. Thomas Wilkinson, was in the habit, during the summer, of bathing in hot & cold water alternately, in the reservoirs of a steam- engine; some weeks afterwards he was seized with difficulty of breathing, his general health became so bad as to render 1 im entirely unfit for any kind of business; he was confined, apparently in a dying state, for 18 weeks, having seven large running ulcers 011 the back, chest and belly ; in this deplorable situation he remained, unrelieved by any of the numerous medi- cines he had recourse to, when a fellow- servant, ( John Rushton) who had seen a similar case cured by your ANTISCORBUTIC DROPS, immediately made a collection to purchase a bottle for the youth, and, it is as true as wonderful, before he had finished one small bottle, the good effects evidently shone forth, and encouraged a perseverance The results are, he is per- fectly well, the ulcers are healed, his general health is good, and he appears constitutionally remade again.
