S Stamp- Duty PRICE 64.1 Paper and Prnt 3d. Sunday a? id Tuesday's Posts. LONDON, TUESDAY, Sept. 21. THE Gazette of . Saturday night contains a letter from Lord Wellington, correcting a material Error in his Lordship's dispatch of the I2d inst. in which the number of prisoners taken in the assault of the town of St. Sebastian was stated to be 270, instead of 670 men. \ LL Pers< LX JAMES l. ondon Gazette Extraordinary, September 20 DOWNING- STREET, SEPT. 19. Major Wyndham arrived this evening with ; dispatch from field Marshal the Marquis o Wellington, dated I. ezaca, the 10th of September, of which the following is ait extract:— A battery was constructed in the horn- work, witl great difficulty, against the works of the castle ot St. Sebastian, w hich opened on the morning of the 8th instant; and 1 have the pleasure to inform you, that the garrison surrendered beforeevening. 1 inclose Lieut.- Gcn. Sir T. Graham's Report and the terms of Capitulation agreed upon with the garrison, and returns of ordnance, ammuui tion, & c. in the place. The loss of the garrison, during the siege, is stated to have amounted to two- thirds of their numbers at its commencement I beg leave again to draw your Lordship's attention to the conduct of Lieut.- Gen. Sir T. Graham, and of the General Officers and troops under his command, in the arduous operation r> f which 1 am now reporting the successful close Under the ordonnance recently issued by the Trench Government, the difficulties of the ope- rations of a siege, and length of time it must take, are greatly increased, and they can he brought tc a conclusion only by the storm of the breach of the body of the place. The merit of success therefore is proportional, ly increased, and it will be found, that the operations did not last longer than has usually beeti required for a place which possessed three lines of defence, including the convent of St. Bartholomew. During the operations against the castle, the navy took charge of the attack upon the island of Santa Clara, by which the enemy was much annoyed in his position in the castle. Capt. Si G. Collier, and the officers, seamen, and marines have continued to afford every assistance in their power, and Lieut.- Gen. Sir T. Graham particu- larly mentions Capt. Bloye, of the Lyra, and Capt Smith; and Lieut.- Col. Dickson, commanding the artillery, has reported his obligations to Lieut O'Reilly, of his Majesty's ship Surveillante, who commanded the seamen employed in the batteries. Since niv last, the enemy have collected their troops towards their left, but have again resumed their old positions since the fall of St. Sebastian. It appears by a report from the Duke del Parque, thai when the third Spanish army were recently crossing the Ebro, at Amposta, after the Allies had retired from before Tarragona, the enemy made a sortie from Tortosa, on the 19tb ult. along the left bank of the Ebro, with about 4000 men, and attacked the third division of the army. The Duke del Parque detached troops from the right bank, under the command of Don Francisco Ferray, the Chief of the Staff of the army, and the enemy were immediately repulsed with considerable hiss. It appears that the troops conducted themselves remarkably well on this occasion, and the Duke del Parque highly applauds the conduct of the Chief of the Staff. . Extract of a Letter from Lieut.- Generul Sir T- Graham, elated Ernani, Sept. 9. I have the satisfaction ro report to your Lord- ihip, that the Castle of St. Sebastian has surren- dered; and I have the honour to submit the Capitulation, which," under all the circumstances of the Case, I trust your Lordship will think I did right to grant to a garrison, which certainly uiade a very gallant defence. Ever since the assault of the 31st ult. the verti cal fire of the mortars, & c. of the right attack was occasionally kept up against the castle, occasion- ing a very severe loss to the enemy; and yesterday morning a battery of 17 24- pounders in the horn work, auothcr of three 18- pounders, still more on the lelr, having been completed by the extroard' Iiary exertions of the Officers of Artillery nnd Engineers, aided by the indefatigable zeal of all the troops; the whole of- he ordnance, amounting to 54 pieces, including two 24- pounders and one howitzer on the island, opened at 10 u. m. against the castle, and with such effect, that before one j>. m. a flag was hoisted at the Mirador Battery by the enemy; and after some discussion, the terms of the surrender were agreed on. Thus, giving jour Lordship another great result of the campaign, in the acquisition to the allied armies of this inter- esting point on the coast, and near the frontier. Capt. Stewart, of the Royals, Aid- de- Camp to TVIajor Gen. llav, who so greatly distinguished himself during ilia siege, is unfortunately among the killed since the hist return. I omitted in my last report to mention my obligations to the great zeal ot Captain Smith, of the Royal Navy, who undertook and executed the difficult task of get ting guns up the steep scarp of the island into a battery which was manned by seamen under his command, and which was of much ser- vice. Capt. Bloye, of tl; e Lyra, has been from the beginning constantly and most actively employed on shore, « nd I feel greatly indebted to his services. Besides the officers of artillery formerly men- tioned, who have continued to serve with equal distinction, I should not omit the names of Captains Morrisun, Power, and Parker, who have been constantly in the breaching batieries, anil in the command of companies. I beg leave to repeat mv former recommendation of Capt. Cameron of the 9th foot, who volunteered to command the attack of the island, and who con- ducted himself so ably on that occcasion, and during all the time he commanded there. LONDON, THURSDAY, Sept. 23. • TUESDAY'S Gazette contains a Proclamation fur the Meeting of Parliament for the dis- patch of business on the 4th of November. A GAZETTE FXTBAOBDIW/ UIY published on Tuesday, ' containing di « patehfs from Sir C . Sifwiirt, dated Zehirra tlr 27th nit. from Alten- ierg the 29th, and from Toplitz of the 30th. ( living an official account of the battles beforf Dresden. TheAllied Army, it appears, debouched from the clefiles of Bohemia on the 20th, when the chief resjsiftnce thfy ( net with- was from a ' corps under Gen. ft. Cyr, of upwards of 15,000 HIMI, which was Successfully dislodged by General Wittgenstein, when the enemy retired upon Koiiig- stein and Lieben'stein.— On" the 2Tth the enemy withdrew into the suburbs and town of Dresden, and a general attack was made on the redoubts which defended Dresden, but it was impossible to penetrate into the city before night- fall, when the order for retreat " was givert.' The enemy sallied ont with a corps of 80,060 men on one wing of the Allies. The loss of the Allies in the attack is estimated at less than 4000. The Austrians chiefly o ffered.— A more general battle took place on the morning of the 28th. Bonaparte attacked the Allies with a force of at least 120,000 men. The heavy and continued rains prevented the infantry on either side coming much into action: the battle was principally confined to a heavy cannonade on both sides, and to several most brilliant charges of Austrian, Russian, and Prussian cavalry. Th enemy continued his efforts till the evening, when finding he could make no impression the action ceased. This battle is supposed to have cost tlie Allies between 6 and 7000 men. The eneny must have suffered more. The Allies retreated m per- feet order on the evening of the 28th.— It is stated with the deepest regret, that about the middle o the day of the 28ih, General Morean, whilst in conversation with the Emperor of Kussia, both his legs carried off by a cannon shot. Sir Charles Stewart, in' a subsequent dispatch nf the 31st of August, from Topliiz, writes, that the brilliant action of the 30th, in which Count Osterman had successfully resisted the advance of the French into Bohemia, was followed by a most decisive victory over that part of the enemy s army which had advanced by Konigstein and Pirna, on the road from Pelerswalde to Toplitz: by which the corps under General Kleist was disengaged from the mountains.— The enemy had pushed forward on the right flank of the Allies, while they were much impeded by almost im- passable roads and unfavourable weather. The enemv arrived at Hollendorf and Kulm, before the artillery and baggage of the Allies hid got elear of the mountains. Miloradovitch attacks with C\ 000 Russian grenadiers, 2,000 infantry, and 4,000 cavalry; Count Colloredo and General Bianchi with 12", 000 Austrians: the remainder was in columns of reserve. As the enemy were posted on the strong heights of Kulm, in a position almost impregnable, the Austrians moved upon the right, the Russians attacked on the left. At the same moment the corps of General Kleist ap- peared in the rear, on the ronii of the enemy s retreat. Both the flank attacks succeeded, and the Russians took 40 guns, 50 tumbrils, much baggage, and the whole equipage of General Van- damme. Nothing remained to the enemy but a desperate and precipitate retreat. The deroute was general; arms thrown away; guns and standards indiscriminately abandoned. The fruits of the victory are Vandamme and six Generals prisoners, 60 EUIIS, 10,000 prisoners, and six standards. The Cossacks and cavalry continue the pursuit. Sir Charles Stewart, who was in this action, received a severe contusion by the explosion of a shell, whirh obliged him to quit the field of battle.— Sir Charles also reports the success of General Blur her over Macdonald, on the 26th of August, when lie took 50 guns, 39 tumbrils, and above 10,000 prisoners. The con- test continued through the 27th and 28lh; the result vi as 30 guns and 5,000 more prisoners. Geneial Blucher issued the following General Orders, on the occasion of his victory over Macdonald :— i! " Silesia is delivered from the enemy. It is to Vour valour, brave soldiers of the Russian and Prussian army under my command, to your efforts mid patience in bearing fatigues and wauts, that 1 owe the good fortune of having wrested a beautiful province from the hands of a rapacious enemy. II. That, underthe. se Impressions, a Committee be row established in this Town, to further the Objects and Interests of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, to be called " The O undle District Committee," which shall be open to all Members of that Society, who may find ir conve nient to attend the Meetings. That, as this increased Distribution must he attended with a great increase ot Expense, to which it is supposed many, considering the important and salutary Design, would gladly contribute, who from various Reasons may not be incline I to become Members of this Society, General Subscriptions be therefore promoted throughout this District, for Donations, annual and occasional. '[' hat as Thousands have been Partakers ol the Blessings of that Relitfious Knowledge, which has flowed from the Bounty of this Society, without bnng aware of its Existence; in order to give a more general Publicity to its Exertions and Designs, these Resolutions together with an Address be forthwith printed, and a sufficient Number of Copies be sent for Distribution to each Member resident in this District, and tiiat such other Measures be taken for their Circulation, as shall seem advisable to the Select Committer. XVII. That the following be the Address: As the Resolutions adopted at the Establishment of the Oundle District Committee, must form the Basis of their Proceedings, their Attention will be directed to two Objec's : Jsf. The best Mode of advancing the general In- terests of the venerable Society, fn aid of which the Committee is instituted; and 2nd. The Communication of ils benevolent Assis- tance to the Poor of this District. I. With regard to the first, it is undeniable, that very many Persons are wholly ignorant of the true Character of the Society tor Promoting Christian Knowledge, and nor a few even of its Existence, who would orberwUe have liberally contributed to its Support. It is necessary tbe. efore to make the society itself, and the Success which lias attended its Labours, more generally known. To this End we state, that this Society has far more than a Cen- tury exerted its vigilant Regards and furnished con- stant Supplies, to the utmost Ex'ent ot its Means, for supporting and advancing the Cause and Interests ot Religion. 1. It has, through the Favour and Blessing of Divine Providence, been enabled to desseminate the Holy Scriptures translated into various Languages, particularly the Welch, Manx, & c. It hasdispefsed al- o our admirable Liturgy, and many pious and judicious Books and Tract,. In the Course of the last Year alone it distributed nearly fourteen thousand Bibles, and upwards of thirty- two thousand Prayer Books; besides New Testaments, aud ether valuable Books. 2. The Education of Youth has also been an Object of the Society's especial Regard and Concern. It has therefore most liberally imparted its Resources for the Benefit ot Charity and Sunday Schools. And in this essential Department its Blessings have been very extensively felt, and often gratefully acknowledged, not only in the British Dominions ; but also in Russia, Germany, Prussia, and many other Countries of both Continents. 3. Another great Branch of the Society's pesign has been to'diffuse the Blessings of Chris'ianity hy the Establishment and Support of religious Missions. It has accordingly been careful to provide for the spiritual Welfare of those near our own Shores; and it has extended its Regards to the destitute Cond'tion ot the Natives ot Africa, as well as, on a more en- larged Scale, to those of Asia, These are the general Designs of the Society; and to them we must add some other Undertakings of a Nature highly interesting. It has been an important Department of the Society's concern, to relieve the Spiritual Necessities of our Army and Navy: thus has much Consolation and Instruction been afforded to the Defenders of our Country. In like Manner its Attention has been directed to the Religiou: Wants of the Poor and Afflicted in Prisons, Hospitals, Sic. To these, as Occasion has required, gratuitous Supplies have been extended. We should also re- qiember the incalculable Benefits conferred upon thousands of our Poor at Home, by the bountiful Distributions that have been made of the Word of Life; a powerful and gratifying Instance of this is exhibited in the Parish of Oundle. In reflecting upon the vast and momentous Mea- sures, let it be borne in Mind, that all ihis is pro- secuted in strict Conformity with ihe Principles ot the British Constitution, both in Church and State Spirit in the RotuI of Peace. Tlut* much with Reipi. tr ro the Society in general. II. We will now briefly advert to the Commti- ication of its benevolent Assistance to the Poor of this District. For the Accomplishment of this most desirable Obj ct, e< e- v poss ble Information is re- quested relative to the Want- existing within our own ' phere, and the Means of relieving tbem • Clergymen . id others are desired to report the Information they nay obtain : and every EHo't will be made to grant gratuitous Supplies to such Par'sbp ® . as are incapabie of raiding Supplies Within themselves. The Support then, and Patronage ot the Public is olicited— To the Wealthy and Charitable we thus leclare the" Object of our Wishes and Endeavours, not doubting that our Means will be proportionate to our Design, the Maintenance and Advancement of this pious Institution, which has proved itself, for so long a Period, a source of National Piety, and Na- tional Honour. Donations and Subscriptions, however small, will be gladly received hy the Rev. C. E. IsuAM. Trea- -<- r; or the Rev. J HEATH, Secretary. XVIll. Northampton, Sept T » th, 1813. On Tuesday Sir Charles Stewart's dispatches were received by Government, comprisi. i ® the official accounts of the victories obtained over Vandamme and Macdmaid, ' i his Gazeits affords very clear detail of the operations leading to the victory; the substance of which is given in tile preceding pa[; e. And on Thursday ' mdrnirtg, another Extfnor- dinary Gazette was published, announcing tl, e most important victory gained during the present Campaign, The following particulars of this glorious intelligence will bo found highly grati- fying :— Tho dispatches communicate the details of the victory gr. inftd bv. the Crown Prince oil the 6th msti near Juterb icli— a victory of the greatest importance, and lik. lv to produce the tnris" bene- ficial results. We find that the Crown Prinr- e conceived the bold idea of crossing the Elhe at Roslau, and moving in the direction . of Leipzic, leaving the Prussian part of his arriiv, - Jtt, 000 strong, between Wittenberg anil Juterb 11 cover Berlins The'success of this plan would place Bonaparte in imminent danger, a? the Crown Prince, at Leipzic, would be' completely in his rear. Nev, however, who had assumed • he command of Oudinot's army, attacked the Prussians on tire 4th and 5th, at Zahne, finally obtained that post, as also that of Sevda. In tlm mean time llie Crown Prince having learned time the French were marching upon . luicrbocli, dame up to the assistance <> f the Prussian army, and completely defeated the enemv at Dmnewitr, who fled ill the di- ection of Torgau and Dresden,' vigorously pursued bv the Allies. On the 27th, a small corps proceeding for Dresden was over- taken at Dnbme, and defeated with a loss nf , 3,000 prisoners. Marshals Nej, Oudiuot, and General Arrighi, D ike of Padua, were with this corps. There were other affairs in the retreat, in which, aud the great battle of the 6th, the^ losi of the enemy is estimated at 16,000 men, fifty guns, and four hulldreJ bagua^ e waggons wrr « taken. As the pursuit was continued, they » i doubt sustained further losses. In the hatile of the 0 h the French fought furiously. ILilf of Ney's escort were killed. Uegtiier" seemed to court death, and Oiidinot charged at tiie head of his division. The dispatches further Confirm the report of the retreat of Davoust from Scliwerin, across the Elbe, in the" direction of Magdebtirgli. We suppose he crossed at Lenzen. They add that the Saxon prisoners, taken in the battle of the 0th, had requested permission to form a Saton Legion, to fight on the side of the Allies, which granted, and that desertion was prevalent ill the French army. In a Iditition to all the above cheering intel- ligence, accounts have been received, which, although not yet fully authenticated, corroborate each other in a most, satisfactory manner, and lead us. 11 hope that triumphs of a still more de- cisive nature have followed those already ob'ained by our gallant allies. These are given' in letters from Aitona of the 14 h, lGib, I7t. li, and 13 h instant, and all agree in S atinj, that Bonaparte in person brought up strong reinforcements to act against the Crown Prince, whose enterprising spirit and repeated sucer- ss begat) to alarm him ; that lie succeeded in f. rcing his way as far as Juterhoch, the seat of the battle of the 6 h, but that on, the 10th a general and. most sanguinary engagement took place, in which he was defeated with the loss of 60,000 men, killed, wounded, and taken ; that bains; cut off from ' lie Dresden road, lie fl'id with 10,000 guards to Magdetmrgh and that Dresden was expected to fall imme- dia'ety. To this it is added, that 11,000 Prussian* had passed the Kibe nt Domitz, and extended along its left bank to Marburg, and that D. ivouit's communications with the Grand Army were thus entirely cut off. Last night Paris Journals were received to the 20th instant. They contain not a sentence of news from Bonaparte or from Dresden. Such a silence at such a crisis can only mean disaster, and this gives additional probability to the rumour of Bonaparte's defeat. IH" Stocks nearlv ns last week. A1 To be S t) L. ERUPTIONS form one of" the most annoying Complaints we are subject to ; their unsightly Appearance urge impatiently their Removal ; and too often this Impatience has caused their Obstinacy — Let these Patients ever remem'ser that the Treat tneiit ought to be mild, innocent, and rational, tha they depend almost universally on internal Irritation,, and from imperfect Digestion ; ar. d that Purgatives are detrimental. — S PI LSB'o R Y'S PATENT ANTI- SCO RBU llC DROPS are now universally pre. ferred in the Cure of these Complaints from their Success : as well as in Scrofula, Scorbutic, Gouty, Rheumatic, and Bilious Complaints. Mr. SPILSBURY has Reason to believe Scrofula is not hereditary, but the Attendant on a State ot Debility in a naturally delicate Habit : thus Children who are visited with Measles antWHooping- Cough, or Scarlet- Fever, or any Disease that leaves them weak and delicate, produce Disease of the Glands, and cans'quent Emaciation. Accidents deranging complicated Structure have the same Effect. A natural Train of reasoning has produced this Con- viction, which has been materially a sisted by observing the PATENT ANTISCORBUTIC DROPS in their Operation ; always assisting the Appetite and general Health; and as these increase, the Disease every Day lessens.— Sea Air or Bathing is only ofUse in as much as change of Air mends the Health, hut he feels persuaded of none other, and when the Strength is not immediately improved, is ot dis- service. COMPOUND ESSENCE, 8s. To Mrs. JOHNSON, 91, Newman- Street. M ADAM, HAVING experienced the good Effect of your invaluable MEDICINE for CHILDREN, while - ething, 1 take this Opportunity, for the good of oiheis. — Being a Father, can judge what their Parents feel, when they see their dear little Infants suffer, without a Possibility of allording them the least Relief; but, thank God, that is happily remov. d, since you have introduced the AMERICAN SOOTHING SYRUP. Having ex- perienced the good Effect with two of my Children, can speak with Confidence:— the first was very ill, and had Fits with cutting his back Teeth ; we no sooner rubbed the Child's Gums than he got better, and his Teeth came through without any more Pain or Convulsion. The other little Darling was so extremely weak that it was distressing to see him : not thinking it was his Teeth, did not apply the Syrup, until a Thought struck my Wife, that she would try the Syrup, as it might be the Teeth. No sooner were his Gums rubbed than he began to amend, and in less than a VVeek no one would have thought it was the same Child, and continued cutting his Teeth without Pain. Jt being impossible to describe the State they were in, shall be happy to satisfy aoy Lady who may have a Child in tlie same way, by calling at my House, No. 6!>, Margaret- Street, Caven- tish- Square. If I should be blessed with any more Children, will always begin to apply the Syrup in I'ime, and am, Madam, your's respectfully, May 10, 1813. MERCER. Bottle. To Thomas Taylor, Esq. No. 9, New Bridge- Street, London. Sir, [ Consider it but an Act of Justice due to the . Merits of your Leake's Patent Pills, to commu nicate to you the following Cure, which has recently beeii performed by then.:— An Acquaintance ot mine, who by the breaking out of an old Venereal Complaint ( attended by a Complication of Disorders arising therefrom) was reduced almost to a Skeleton, and although he had the best medical Advice which could be obtained, and tried a Variety ot Patent Medicines, nothiiig could be procured which seemed to suit his Case, or to do him any Service; he remained in most reduced and pitiable Situation for two Years, unable to follow his Profession, and scarcely able to walk or even to stand on his Legs ; in Fact, no one who knew him ever supposed it possible for him to recover. He was advised at last. to try your Leake's Pills— he did so, adhering strictly to the Directions given with them; he had not taken more than four Boxes before he found an Alieration for the better; this encouraged him to proceed, and by taking a few- Boxes more he found his Appetite and Strength gra- dually return, and is now as healthy and stout as any Man 1 know. You are welcome, Sir, to refer any Person tome for a Confirmation ot the above Account if it should be doubted.— 1 am, Sir, your obedient humble Servant, THOMAS I'UROAY.
