THE SALISBURY AND WIN CHE JOUR AND GENERAL ADVERTISER OF WILTS, HANTS, DORSETi AND SOMERSET [ NUMBER 3786. VOLUME LXX1V.] MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, iso. 9. PRICE SIXPENCE HALFPENNY./^ flmP D,' t/• • 3?<*- I Paper and Print, 3d. Monday's and Tuesday's Posts. FOREIGN NEWS. From the German Papers, AMSTERDAM, Aug. 8. TROOPS from the interior of France as well as from the neighbouring departments, are marching liicher by thousands. The roads from Paris to " Antwerp swarm with soldiers. It isthesatne in this country. The troops which were at the Holder will be removed by waggons to Bergen- op- Zoom, and those which were in the \ lifferent camps were en their march to Brabant. The regiments in Germany are also to Return. The sluices at Bergen- op- Zoom have been opened. Lieut. Ceil. Brune, Master of the Horse to the King, is appointed Governor of Breda. General Tarayre, who has; been reinforced, has taken a position between the village of Putten and Bergeu- op- Zooui, and unites with the French army, being his right wing. The flotilla, which advances before tlie line of the fleet, lately bombarded Batbz for the whole day. Fresh troops arrive daily at Antwerp. About 5000 of the Imperial Guard are every moment expected. The Addresses of the Rabbis have not been fruitless; some detachments of Jem have already arrived at the Hague. They attract much observation. A number of the*: Jews have requested the blessings of the Rabbis before their departure. LONDON, MONDAY, AUGUST ST. This morning a Gottenburgh Mail arrived. The following are the only, articles of intelligence it contains STOCKHOLM, Aug. 10.— We have not received any ac- counts from our army and navy, nor has any thing tran- spired of the present state of the negotiations for l'eace • between this country and Russia and Denmark. Letters from Marseilles and Genoa state, that the French Consul in Algiers, Dubois TalKvHfc, has been arrested by order of the Dey, arid that war has been declared against France. Letters have been received from Petersburgh, to the 31st ult. and from Riga, to the Uthiost. By these we learn, that t[ ie report of a general embargo in the harbours, of Husna and the Batie is erroneous. It is true that an embargo has been imposed, but,' instead of being general, it is confined to native ships only, and its sole object is to prevent their falling into the hands of tbe powerful British force cruizing in that sea. With a licence from this country, it is understood that any Russian ships would be permitted to ta| ce their departure. AU the difficulties respecting the American vessels ii) the portaf- Riga have been removed by the good understanding which subsists between tlie con- " sisjnees and the official agents of the Russian Government, The accounts intermediately received from Denmark apprize us, that tlie scene of marine depredations by the Bullish ships of war and privateers will be shifted from the Baltic to the North Seas. The consequence of this variation v, ill be, that the productive trade from Heligoland will suffer material interruption, unless our AdmirAlty shall afford it prompt aud adequate protection. A vessel which left Flushing on the 23d, has brought advice that au action took place o" n the 21st, between one of our small squadrons and tbe enemy's flotilla, in which the latter were defeated,, with the luss of four or five vessels, The. garrison of Flushing arrived on Friday in the Downs in several men of war. The Expedition intended to reinforce" Sir Arthur Wellestey, goes to Cadiz, and will consist ( besides artillery) wfa brigade of Foot Guards, two brigades of Light Cavalry, fciul two brigades of Heavy Cavalry; the cavalry to consist of C. BC roa'uMttt of Life- Guardi. the regiment pf Horse- Cuards ( Blue), the Scotch Greys, aUf the limiskilleft ^ Jragqon*. * ';'* -, ' ' •'• ill An Expedition against Guadaloupe is said to be in Contentplation. Reinforcements, consisting principally of drafts from • he Guards, are on their march for Portsmouth and Ply- mouth, to- join Lord Wellington.— Others will proceed frujn Ireland, for the same destination. Monday se'raught, at 12 o'clock, P. M- General Floyd, Commander of Cork, received an express ffOm the Cas£ te of Dublin, with an iirder for tbo immediate embarkation for Spain of . the 1st . regiment of Dragoons, or Royals, at priesent quartered in that district. In consequence of several vessels having been Cap- tured off Beachy Head by French privateers, some of them part of the fleet from Oporto, representations were made to the Lords of the Admiralty, by " the Committee for managing the affairs of Lloyd's.— In reply, it is stated, that " their Lordships are concerned that so many captures have recently happened in the neighoourbood of Beachy Head, occasioned principally by the eruizers having been driven by the late strong westerly gales to take shelter under Dungerre- s." A frigate, three sloops, and a cutter, are now cruizing in the vicinity of Beacby Head, for'the protection of the trade. We understand that his Majesty has been pleased to establish an uniform dress for the Lord Lieutenants ot the different counties of Great Britain. FI- NF. RAL of MATTHEW BOLTON, ESQ.— The funeral of this distinguished man took ylacc, with appropriate solemnity, on Thursday last, at Haudsworth, about three quarters'of a mile froinSoho. A hearse and nine mourning coaches attended, but tbe coffin was carried by three sets of bearers, by hand, in mourning, and scarfs ; the hearse, and coache=," and numberless carriages of the deceased's friends, followed. Eighteen singers, in cloaks, preceded, Ringing appropriate psalms the wliole way. All ( lie beadles offiirrtimgham rode on horseback, and kept the way open. The corpse was followed to the grave by COO workmen of the manufactory » f Soho, who had each a silver medal presented to him, struck for the occasion : they wore hat- bands and gloves, and some mourning. The town was emptied of its principal inhabitants. Tbe workmen were provided, after the funeral, with a dinner at Wardswurth. The annual conference of tbe Methodists held this year at Manchester terminated » n Tbursdry2"> 9 Preachers at- tended.— Actual increase of Members during tlie past year, 14,200.— 6200 in England and Ireland, and 8000 in Ame- rica. The number of Preachers received in conference, after the fair probationary years, exclusive of those in the districts, was 20; and the number of new chapels opened jtinee last eonference is stated to be considerable. At Guildhall, before the Commissioners of Bankrupts, on tin- last sitting day, a bankrupt was committed to New- gate for not m iking a true schedule. Thejournal which he produced appeared to have been written at one time, and he - wore that the articles were delivered according to dates; but, on examination, it was ascertained by the water- mark, that the paper of which the book was made, was not manufactured until two years after the pretended dates of the entries, which created a strong suspicion in the minds of the creditors that he had secreted large sums of money. Marlbdrough- street, Aug. 28.— Airs Plunkhtt ( formerly Wi s Gunning) was this day brought up before the Magis- trates of this office, and underwent a long private exami- nation, touching a charge of forgery, preferred against her by John King, the well- known money- lender. There had been various money transactions between the parties, and the charge is that in these transactions tile lady uttered a bill of exchange, with forged acceptancc of her Husband, Major Plunkett. The investigation was private, anil- after a full inquiry into all the circumstances of tbe case, the lady- was held to bail, to appear at the next General garter Sessions for the county of Middlesex, in order to take her trial. " , , - I5OW- STRF, F. T.— G. Richardson, - a person employed M > the Inland Office of the Post- Office, Was this morning brought upfor examination before Mr. Read, chaiged with having committed robberies in that department to a great extent. Mrs. Canning, with whom the prisoner cohabited, and who had been extremely active in passing several Bank post- hills, part of the'property stolen'by the prisoner, Was, with him, fully committed for trial. MARK- LANE, Monday, Aug. 28. The supply of Wheat this day was more than adequate to the demand ; the prices, which had a start on Friday, went back to those of the pre- ceding Monday, andthc market closed With a declining aspect. Most other articles are in a similar predicament:— the finest qualities of each in tolerable request, the inferior so'rts of difficult sale. HAMPSHIRE. CHANGE " f Moftnr. ti.— A man was examined yesterday at Ihiion Hail, on suspicion of ti iiig the person who mur- dered Elizabeth Wiiitesflocd, about two years ago, in Uiglei's- laoe, St. GeorgeVfield*. A woman named Robin- son state", that the- pri . oner had lived with her lip winds of three years; tle- v lived near the spot where the mufttef was committed ; he had, however, lately left her, and was married to another woman. On the night on which Eli- zabeth Wiiitcrllond was murdered, he came home at a late hour, very much intoxicated, and told her she would be alarmed, a: al the neighbourhood . would be alarmed, at something which bad just happened, but desired her not to get tip; next morning she heard of the murder. Since that time they had often quarrelled, and he had frequently thi- eatened her that lie would Serve her as he had seived Elizabeth WiiiterB mil. The prisoner said, that on the morning the ' murder was ' committed, he got up between four and five o'clock, to go to Greenwich : he then heard ufthe murder, a. id aw the body, of which circumstance he had frequently spoken to ditfereut people.— He was re- uiiinded for alio her examination. LITTR-. ACH « f HBOMISE tif MARRIAGE.— At the Lam- aster Assi » fs, a ran-" in which Miss Ilulme, of Liverpoul, was plaintiff, and Comet Warbriek, of the 4th Dragooon Guards, Defendant, excited geueial interest.— Serjeant Cockell, for the plaintiff, stated that she had been treated with the utmost injii- 0' ce, inhumanity, and cruelty. She was a young woman of great, personal attractions, and bet- mis- fortune lad beep het excessive fondness lor an ungrateful man w ho had drawn from her almost every sixpence she bad. This voung woman had kept a confectioner's shop at ' Liverpool, " and by her gains in that shop had supplied this contemptible man with money. For a year and a half he bait b - aialed at her house, and had received in her society everv co:.:'' ort. She next assisted him ill the purchase rfa (' ill- near-, in the 4th Diagoon Guards; and when he had joined tV. a i .- giment, he continued to obtain money from lwi- by tiLfulTetters of pretended affection, until she was unable tai supply him fartlu r, and then he basely dropped a, i con ".. nondenee ' with her. The whole of her demand exceeile- t 401)/. She had no proof but tlve letters of the Defendant, and lie never wrote one but when he wanted P: c. ney. These letters were re- art, and exhibited in the » , longest light the meanness and duplieiiv of the Defendant, co tvasteJ with the generosity and Sincere affection of the • erestin.- girl to whom tttcy waj- e addressed-, and who ! lied ti ii with money wiieu ait iii. relatives had casfc ulf. iuth.- se letters the Defendant had in general • ,. hilly ava- dei! the nient oil of specific sunn, nieinly , jiri - f" « jjur. wisbttiuw > « ;>>• < 5 » r< jp » » , for 1 owed fur » fortnig s's mess," & c.; but they would enable the Jury t<> estimate the damages; and he trusted the Gentlemen of the re- giiuent would learn from them what sort of man they had i , their corps, and spurn him fr. hu their society,— Mr. Baron Wood observed, that this was not an anion for damages, but for a demand, which the Plaimitf would h ive a great deal of difficulty in proving, without a bill ill equity. His Lordship therefore recommended as the best mode, that toe whole matter should be referred to a utlemau of the Bar, who might examine both parties 011 tb. After some conversation, this was agreed to; and the Plaintiff's demand, the breach of promise of marriage, and all matters in difference, Were referred to arbitration, upon condition that the letters should be delivered up to tbe Plaintiff* as Soon as, tbe arbitrator should have made litis award.— Miss Hu| ote was in Court during the whole trial, rud shed tears abundantly, while tbe Learned Serjeant was ailing the lett"|: s. [ Among the Promotions in last night's Gazette, R. New- man, Gent. is appointed a Cornet in the 4th Dragoon Guards:, by purchase, vice Warbrick, the Defendant in the above trial. j ' " At these Assizes there was also a remarkable trial at thr » - Crown bar, viz. that of William Bell, who was charged: with the- wilful- murder of Win. Brown, by violence and ill- treatment, whilst under his care in the asylum for lunatics at Manchester.— Robert Brown deposed that his broth r ( the deceased lunatic) was placed in tbe asylum in March last, anil after remaining 18 days, was fetehed away, Dr. Winstanley having deelaied that there was no chance of bis getting better. He appeared in great paia tin his jourpey home, but to tbe surprise of his friends he was perfectly sensible. Three days after, when in bed, he • appeared to be very uneasy, a id in consequence the n it* ness put bis hand under his back to alter his jKisition, when be called out, apparently in great agony, " Brother, my breast- bime is broken." The witne s asked him who did it, when he replied, " Bell did it;" and he appeared quite sensible he was dying. He lived two days aft^ r this. This • testim my was corroborated by the wife of the deceased, who said the deceased was continually complaining of his ribs, and attributed it to the priso- er; and that he " fer- vently prayed to Cod to release him froiu'liisuiisery.— Here Judge Chambre stopped the evidence. He observed, that although tue deceased bad lucid intervals, yet 110 doubt,' lunatics in general bad a great dislike to their keepers. With rjsptyit to tbe declarations of the deceased igain 1 th prisoner, he did not think they came up to'tbe principle' recognised b'y law, of a person being in a dying state ; for the only, expression that could be attributed'to his being ensible of brfdeath, was his saying his prayers, and that his unsupported declaration against the prisoner CORS not therefore be received.— Dr.- Winstaiilev, the Physieiafi . to the Asytum, said, tliat. he bad attended the deceased, twice a week ; and, on tbe day before he was taken away by his relative.:, he was stript before him, and stodd upright; which he thought was impossible if bis ribs had been broken ; nor did he think it possible the deceased could have lived four bf five davsin the- state be was described 11 lie. He h id attended, with several surgeons, the opeui g of the body, and found the uppi- r and lower part of the iirea t- bime nnpietely separated; and had no doubt but that his death was. occa- ioued by the injury he had received 00 his chest. Five ribs on each side were found broken; but how the d ceased came in that s . ocking state, could not be ascertained. Tbe keeper had a good charactar for hislyiinanity. Tne. MR. PYE, professor of health on an improved medical principle, particularly c/ jicaaous in obstinate GOUT, RHEUMATISM, and PALSY, without external application, ( occasionally evinced by respectable private re- ference,) may be consulted every day, at Mr. CooKt's, i- iiglMstreet, Salisbury. Mr. Pye's remedy, founded in sciencc, and matuj- ed by practice, ( the re'sulf of an early connexion with the profession of chemistry,) consists of three ingredients, forming a com- fortable stimulant, and penetrating detergent liquid mixture, which, as it will not keep in a state of combination, requiring also particular preparation, to ensure success, is invariably prepared and administered by himself, when from its w'aim penetrating quality, pleasant taste and flavour, the weakest stomach is never known to reject it, speedily alleviating the most accuts pains by removing obstructions, promoting cir- culation, and changing the habit, thereby reducing the operation of the human functions to that regular and just mediu 11, generally considered the chief criterion of health. It does not contain either mercury, antimony, nor the least noxious or nauseous particle, requiring 110 confinement, being so safe that the adultus potion is usually given to youth of either sex of the age'of fifteen, and is so. effectual as seldom to require a repetition oftener than ten elays or a fortnight. During the period of recovery, which, from its invigorating principle, is generally effected' by two or three judicious re- p titions, particular attention is requisite to a prescribed rational regimen. A diet card is constantly given, which, by preventing inadvertence, promotes . convalescence, and ac- celerates the cure. It is not usual to propose terms with per- sons ot respectability, being themselves most competent to appreciate its value. . Confident in its approved eminent superiority, ( which renders its publication indispensably due to the community,) " and consistent with his original public communication, Mr. Pye looks forward to the time when the disclosure of this im- portantarcana mny be deemed of natiioniil importance ; toac- ceieratew. otch, its e fficacy is readily submitted to science and canriel philanthropy. .-::-,. - - Uiou- Srati;!, Saussvitv, Sept. 2.,. THE English have 4unk . some vessels ill the Scheldt, to prevent the French flotilla, which is going " P the river, from coming down. The object of the enemy was to take Antwerp and to • surprise the squadron in the Scheldt; Imt we have reason to believe that this object cannot be obtained. The. fleet is at Antwerp, where all preparations arc made to produce ii) a few hours an inundation Which will protect the place against all attacks 011 the land side. Oil the Scheldt the ehjps will be protected by their own guns, as well, as the batteries on the banks, which have, by the order of his Majesty, been augmented to four additional batteries, myu. led with 36- poatidefs. August in. English ships arrive daily with ammunition and provisions at Waleheren ; and the enemy' is forming as considerable magazines there as if lie meant to hold that i- land for a year. From the Slh to the 13th there have been daily actions and cannot. ading along the Scheldt. The enemy-, it seems, has shewn himself oft" lielvoetsluys, whence severa) ships of war have proceeded tu Doi'drfcehL A great number nf the enemy's transports have also, within these lew days, been Seen on the coast towards the Texel. LONDON, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, th. German papers of the 20th .. tilt. ( 011c day later than ... we received on'Wednesday} arrived this moiaiirtg. ' lliejr chief contents are totally in opposition to the former ac- counts; they assert that peace bad not been signed, and that tiler-: was no probability of that event taking place, the Em|> eri> r having called to his Councils men known to be decidedly Ivostile to France.— Articles from Vienna, and of course published under French influence, mention these circumstances. These papers contain the French official account of the battle of Tdaveia. It is but a very short dispatch Iroin Marshal Jourdan to the French Minister at War, Count Hui- nberg, formerly Gen. Clarke. It ijainis the victory, but admits great loss in all the French regiments, the battle being hardly fought. With the foreign papers private letters have been received from Olmutz, dated the tith ilist. which state, that at that time tlie preliminaries of ] ieace had not been signed,- lior had any notice been given of the rupture of the armistice. The principal Austrian army had been re- inforced to 200,000 inert, and that of the Aretiduke John to 63,000 ' lien. By recctu letters from Sweden, we learn that a per- fect good understanding seems restored between that country and our Commanders in the Baltic; mutual enter- tainments' haYe" been given and ieceived. By the Prince.; of Wales packet, arrived at Yar- mouth from Flashing, which port she left 011 Wednesday, General Houston and bis Aid- dc- Caiup have arrived. The ( lenel'al is very niiwe'l with a fever, The letters frouti the army state that nothing further can " be eliected by It.— The country adjacent to the Scheldt is HOW inundated wherever there was any probability of our troops approaching; the ships of the enemy have bdeii carried. completely beyond the reach of our fleet; and the « .-!]<" inyV military force ha « received considerable reinforce- ments. They can be distinctly seen with the naked eve from val'ios points occupied by our troops ; and from the extent of their line, it is estimated that their present number cannot be less than 6' 0,000. Under these circum- stances, it is supposed that strong garrisons will be left in the island of Walcheren, and the re. it of the army will teturii home. On Wednesday the Hon. Capt. Fitzroy Stanhope, Ai. d- de- Cainp to Sir Arthur Welle- ley ( now Lord Welling- ton), arrived at the Secretary of State's Office, with dis- patclies I'fom that General, dated atT'Meitosa 011 tlie 8th - iiistanti— They state, that as soon as the British army had recovered from the fatigue of the battles of the 27th and S8tli ulti Lord Wellington proposed to march against Soult and whowere advancing with the intention of gHilng in iw < rear. A Dispatch from Sir Arthur Weliesley, dated De- Icytosa, Aug. 8, expresses great dissatisfaction at' the conduct of Geuer< t: ' T " ' a, for giving up ' he important post of Talavera, for exposing the comhi led armies to i n tt. ick in front and rear at the same Uj » ie, and for abandoning the hospital. In t . s i uation the British General found it ad visable to take up a defensive position o.. the- Tagus. " Accordingly I marched on the 4th, and crossed the Tagus by the bridge of Arco Bispo, and have con- tinued my route to this place, in which I am well situated to defend the passage of Almaraz and the lower parts of the Tagus. Gen.
